Invasive species of snakes, including the Burmese python and boa constrictors, have infiltrated natural habitats of native animals throughout Florida. Originally kept as pets, when these animals are illegally released or accidentally escape captivity, they can drastically alter the delicate local ecosystem they enter. These interlopers increase competition for food resources and can also threaten the eggs or young of local species. As these invasive species spread, concerns rise for the safety and protection of the native plants and animals.

The Florida Python Challenge® is a state-sponsored program to safely capture and remove Burmese pythons from wildlife areas. Private citizens may hunt pythons on private land with permission of the landowner and may obtain a permit to hunt them on public lands. This type of species control is necessary to help ensure minimal impact on local wildlife and ecosystems.
