How to Tackle the Math Achievement Questions on the ISEE Test

The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) Mathematics Achievement section is used both for admission to private schools, and for placement once you are accepted. It is one of the two mathematics tests on the ISEE. The entire ISEE is comprehensive and evaluates all that you have learned so far in your education.

Because of this dual purpose, there is a wide range of topics that may be addressed on this test and knowledge of basic mathematics is essential for success. This section of the ISEE is focused on your ability to solve problems using the information provided, and your mathematical ability.

What to Expect on the ISEE Mathematics Achievement Section?

The ISEE is a timed test. You will have 40 minutes in which to complete this section. All questions are multiple-choice, with four possible answers. That means no “All of the above” or “None of the above” choices. There will be 47 questions, so time management is important. There is no penalty for guessing and this is not a “Pass/Fail” test. You will receive a score which will be used as a measurement against other test-takers in your same grade. This test can be taken online, or at a designated center. There are restrictions on what you can bring if you take the test in person, so check before you go.

How to Prepare for the ISEE Mathematics Achievement Section

Because it is a comprehensive examination, questions relating to math at all grade levels will be presented. Don’t try and learn anything new—just review what you have learned in the past. You should already have knowledge of basic arithmetic. Study definitions and terminology, such as scientific notation. For the algebra questions, you should know classes and properties of functions (linear and quadratic), and basic rules for performing operations and functions. For the geometry questions, you should know common formulas (such as area, circumference, and the Pythagorean Theorem) as well as basic trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, and tangent).
