Sure, I’ve Done This Before…

If you’re a nursing student, you’re bound to be asked by patients, “So you’ve done this before, right?” before you perform a procedure. It’s never good to lie, but there are creative ways to address their question and alleviate the anxiousness they may be feeling. You have likely practiced a skill on a dummy or fellow student several times before doing it on a patient, so if you respond with something along the lines of “Yes, I’ve done this before” or “I’ve practiced this skill many times!” you are in fact telling the truth. Of course, if you ever feel unsure about a procedure, it is best to ask your instructor for guidance.
