No matter what you’re studying to become, school is hard. Family, children, jobs, and friends all compete for our attention, and if you’re anything like me, the last thing you’d like to spend your precious free time doing is writing yet another essay with an attached APA-style reference sheet.
There were several times while I was in school that I literally ran from the computer, yelling “That’s it! I’m done!” One of those incidents involved a 10 page research paper that had mysteriously disappeared from the computer. Did I mention this paper was also worth 30% of my grade and due the next morning? Many tears, several cups of coffee, and what I was pretty sure was a new case of carpal tunnel later, and I had completed the assignment- and gained a deep sense of accomplishment. I could have made excuses or begged the teacher for an extension, but instead I buckled down and finished what needed to be done.
Griffin Furlong serves as a great reminder that no matter what your challenges, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Homeless off and on again since his mother died at age 6, he recently was named Valedictorian of his senior class at First Coast High in Jacksonville, Florida. In his graduation speech, he said “Giving up is not an option. Excuses should never be made…I never gave up, no matter how badly I wanted to. To everyone sitting here before me… do not live a life without purpose. Deep down inside, you know you have something to show, whether you realize it or not.”
As Will Rogers once said, “The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking spaces.” No matter what challenges life hands you, do not let anything block your path to success. You are strong, smart, capable, and you can turn your dreams into reality if you are willing to put in the work. No matter what you may face now or in the future, take a deep breath, buckle down, and believe you can do it. Success is right around the corner- never give up until it’s yours.
