[17] His career has spanned more than three decades and expanded past music.

[18] Smith began rapping at the age of 10, influenced by the hip-hop group The Treacherous Three. [19] His family, especially his mother and grandfather, were supportive of his music. [20] By the spring of 1984 16-year-old Smith was creating demo tapes in his grandparents home and sending them to various record companies, including Def Jam, with whom he eventually signed a record deal.

[21] LL Cool J’s first single, “I Need a Beat,” sold over 100,000 copies, and his first record, Radio, was released on November 18, 1985, to critical acclaim. [27] He is a two-time Grammy winner and in 2021, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an award for musical excellence.

[30] But it seems he’s not done yet, as he continues to be involved in music, acting, his community, and his philanthropy work.
