NEW Streamlined Accomodations for the ACT®

The ACT Assessment is one of the most widely used tests to demonstrate what students have learned throughout their high school tenure. It provides colleges and universities with information used for placement, recruitment, advising, and retention. It is typically taken by over half of high school graduates every year, making it one of the most common standardized tests used. Changes to the ACT occur regularly to keep the test updated and aligned with current testing procedures.

Why the Changes?

One recent change to the ACT occurred in summer 2021. It was made to increase accessibility to the test for students with disabilities and students with allowable accommodations already included in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan. These changes streamline the accommodations eligibility requirements.

What Has Changed?

Starting in the 2021-2022 academic testing year, students who already receive accommodations at their school will automatically be eligible for allowable testing accommodations when they register for the ACT and request accommodations. Eligible students include those who currently receive accommodations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. These laws already include rigorous requirements to determine disability status and identify appropriate education accommodations. Reflecting that, the ACT will include already identified necessary accommodations.

What about Other Situations?

Students who do not have an IEP or 504 plan may still be eligible for accommodations. The ACT will use the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standard to determine whether a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity” exists and determine reasonable accommodations for taking the ACT Assessment.

Is Anything Else New?

Yes, in addition to this change, the ACT is updating its system for requesting accommodations. The new requirements will collect less information and documentation. The goal of these changes is to simplify the process for requesting and receiving accommodations when registering for the ACT.
